This week, while both our teachers were off to Chicago, America for a conference we had Mr Johnson. We studied a old fashioned poetry called the Inchape Rock. We read all 17 verses and were to only pick one and make a DLO about and explain what the verse meant. I decided to choose verse 10 which it says "Sir Ralph the Rover sail'd away, He scour'd the sea for many a day; And now grown with plunder'd store, He steers his course for Scotland's shore". I have picked this verse because it tells that Sir Ralph was a really imperfect and bad private because he has stolen a lot of money from other privates. To make the verse stand out we were to illustrate the verse by adding pictures that connected to the verses. As you can see I have added a picture of a pirate stealing treasure.
I am a Year 8 student at Panmure Bridge School in Auckland, NZ. I am in Learning Space 2 and my teachers are Ms Kirkpatrick and Mrs Anderson.

Ballad Poem | Charlotte Anne | First Rugby Match
This week LS2 focused on a ballad poem which was based on a pioneer name Charlotte Anne. Charlotte Anne wasn't like other women. She wore jeans that means would wear and Hobnail boots that were size 6. She worked as a bullocky (bullock driver) with other men and she broke down social barriers and wasn't ashamed of being herself and what she did. She took a lot of risk in her life and told herself that women are just capable as men. During reading this poem we learnt a few words such as Catamaran, Marrow, Yarning, Caressed. The word I found interesting was caressed which means to stroke someone or something gently. We didn't just research about Charlotte Anne but also the author of the poem. His name was John Thomas Diamond (short for John.T Diamond). We wrote facts about him and I learnt that he was a New Zealand Author and sadly passed away in 2001. I have worked collaboratively with Fraidoon, Miki and Aung Naing to complete this DLO. After creating this DLO we were to make another DLO based on something special that happened in the 1870's. Fraidon, Miki, Aung Naing decided to research about the first rugby match. We learnt that back in the days there were only 18 players allowed on the field and right now there is only allowed 15. There were some little changes to rugby like the points scored and also the population. Fraidoon, Aung Naing, Miki and I have had fun during this poetry session.

Poetry | Metaphor
As part of poetry today we were to read a poem called seasons that included metaphors in it. This poem was written by David Hill who wrote the Two Day Wonder poem we read last week. A metaphor is when you describe someone or an object without using like or as. For example the classroom was a zoo (similie - the classroom was like a zoo) or Maria is a chicken (similie - Maria is like a chicken). In our poem we had four metaphors which were: In winter the tree is a black skeleton, in spring the tree is a white bonfire, in summer the tree is a green galaxy and in autumn the leaves of the tree is golden rain. After reading the poem we were to create a DLO explaining what a metaphor is and write down our own examples of a metaphor.

Walking to school | Juxtaposition Poem
As part of poetry this week we read a poem called Two Day Wonder which was written by David Hill. Our first task was to list all the synonym to the words: sick, depressed, sad or bored. Then we wrote down the synonyms for well, bright, happy and active. Then we listed 5 opposite sentences that were in the poem such as the dog sulked in his basket - The dog gallops around the house. This is called Juxtaposition. Juxtaposition means when you put two words together to make a contrast. For example Cold/Hot or Winter/Summer. Our task that we were to post was our poem. We were to create our own version of David Hills poem but it had to be based on our way to school. As you can see I have two different poems which is opposite to each other. I have a poem for Winter and one for Summer. As part of writing down the synonyms we were to write high standard words in our poems. For example instead of using happy you can use ecstatic. To help us find more vocabulary and to make our poem powerful we used a word cline. This really helps us succeed in our vocabulary skills.

The Unfinished Drink
This week we read a narrative poem (A poem that tells a story) about a fallen soldier who was in the Machine Gun Battalion force. This poem includes a soldier named La Tour Mollet d"Auvergne (who is known as Ted) who once never returned to drink his beer. The story started when he and fellow mates went to the Waihao Forkes Bar at Waitemata and had their last drink before he went. Then the train signaled the soldiers at 7:20 and he said to the publican to retain his beer as he will be back. On June the 2nd, 1941 he died which meant he never came back to finish his drink. This poem made me feel sad because he lost his life and never came back and I also feel happy because Teds beer is a memorial standing at the Waihao Forkes Bar. He is now remember for his talented actions during World War 2 (1939-1945).

Poetry
L.I To use a range of vocabulary to create a picture in the reader's head.
This week for Writing we did our lesson as a whole class instead of doing it in our groups. For writing we worked on writing a Poetry using Nouns , Verbs , Adjectives , and Adverbs words. For our writing session we were divided into groups of four and had to cooperate with each other in our groups the meanings for a Noun , Verb , Adjective and a Adverb. After that in our groups we had to write down 2 examples of a Noun , Verb , Adjective and Adverb. Soon we wrote a Poetry together in our groups using the Noun , Verb , Adjective and Adverb words we wrote down. Our writing Must Do Task was to write a Poetry by our selves using the same process we used in our groups. I learnt that a adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. I was very struggling on picking words that will fit my poem to make it good. I think for next time I should find more catching and better words.
