Who Am I?

For the past previous week LS2 have been working on a challenge called Who Am I? This challenge is like Where Am I from but instead it is based on famous people around the world such as Tenzing Norgay, Nelson Mandela, Princess Diana etc. There were 10 people and for the task given we were to write down who they are, where there from, why are they famous, quote (if they have one), 5 facts about them, their country on google maps, their flag, and a picture of them. This was a lot of work which is why I was working with Miki and Alex. 

Where in the World am I?

This Week Mrs Anderson has set a task for LS2 called Where in the world am I? This challenge has numerous of remarkable places in the world. What we were to do was find out what the place is, where the place is standing, when it was built, who uses the building and why is there or why is it built. We also wrote 5 interesting facts about that place/building. There were 10 different places in the world we worked on which was the Great Mosque of Heart, Eiffel Tower, Burj Khalifa, Statue of Liberty, Grand Palace, Buckingham Palace, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Mona Lisa, Taj Mahal, and the Sydney Opera House. We were to work with a partner which was called our ‘’travel buddy’’ and my travel buddy was Miki. The most interesting building Miki and I learnt about was the Leaning Tower of Pisa. We learnt that the Leaning Tower of Pisa was built 515 years old ago which was years ago. We also learnt that The Leaning Tower of Pisa wa just one of the buildings that is leaning there are other such as the Campanile of San Nicola, and the Campanile of San Michele.

City Of Sails Challenge 5|Coat of Arms NZ Labelled

For my last activity for one the City Of Sails Challenge I was to label the Coats of Arms NZ. I was to explain what the pictures in the Coat of Arms NZ symbolizes for example the hammer represents the mining industry in New Zealand and the sheaf of wheat represented the land industry in New Zealand. I learnt that the three vertical lines on the boat symbolizes Cook Straight which is what separates the South and North Island of New Zealand. 

City Of Sails Challenge 4|Alphabet Key of Auckland

For my fourth activity I did the Alphabet Key of Auckland. This activity was basically filling each of the alphabet letters with things that are based on Auckland. For example the letter N could be the New Zealand Breakers because they come from Auckland, NZ or F can be Farming since we have a lot of farming industry. It was pretty hard because it was hard to find a topic based on Auckland that started with the letter x, y, and z, but then I figured out X Mas, Yellowhammer Bird, and the Z Gas Station was one. 

City Of Sails Challenge 3|Welcome Sign

For one of the City Of Sails Challenge I made a Welcome Sign for tourist or any visitors from other international countries. The Kiwi symbolizes New Zealand, the boats symbolizes Auckland because of how we are the City of sails city, the bridge is the Auckland Harbour Bridge and the starts on the 4 side of DLO represent the stars from the New Zealand flag. I have drawn these pictures which meant I didn't need to attribute them. 

City Of Sails Challenge 2|Rotorua NZ

For one of the City o Sails Challenge I decided to do what suburb I would live in New Zealand and why I would live there. I decided to choose Rotorua since I've been there multiple times. I would want to go to Rotorua because of the huge activities there are especially the Skyline and Lodge which is where I've been in the previous holidays. Not only that, but the camp site is really amazing especially Tui Ridge. Tui Ridge is a camping facility and they have a lot of fun activities to do during your holiday or weekend there. You can do mountain biking and high ropes as well. 

City Of Sails Challenge 1|Welcome To Auckland Sign

This week LS2 have been doing the City Of Sails Challenge. There were numerous of task to choose from. The task were based on Auckland and our challenge is called the City Of Sails Challenge because Auckland has over 135,000 boats or yatches. We were to pick from 48 activities and only do 5. For my first activity I decided to choose to make a collage based on the landmarks of Auckland. The activity I enjoyed the most was the Welcome Design because I got to be creative and imaginative.

Book Week activity 6|Differences Between Fiction & Non-Fiction

Today I have completed my 6th activity for one of the Book Week tasks. For this Book Week activity I was to make a DLO writing down the differences between a fiction book and a non-fiction book. It is simple. A fiction is a made up story and a non-fiction is a true story. There are other points on the difference between fiction and non-fiction. 

Book Week Activity 5|The Dragon of Fortune|Geronimo Stilton

Today I have completed my fifth task for one of the Book Week activities. For this activity I was to count how many words in average there could be in 3 pages of a book. So what I had to was gather all three total numbers from the 3 pages and divide it by 3. I decided to do this activity on The Dragon of Fortune|Geronimo Stilton because it had less words then any other novel books. On page 1 there was 66 words, on page 2 there was 99 words, and on page 3 there was 62 words. The onomatopoeia (e.g zzzzzzzz) counted as well. Out of all activities this was the best so far.  

Collaborative Comprehension|The Battle of the Somme

This week was collaborative comprehension which means everybody collaborated on the same work instead of in groups. We did this since people were getting tested. For one of the collaborative comprehension activities we were to read the Battle of the Somme event and then answer 10 questions based on the story. One of the questions I answered was: Why did the British army become involved in the Battle of the Somme? The answer was the British army were involved in order to help the French. We were also to give evidence from the story which will back up our answer. 

Reading Theory|Level 11

Today at home I went on read theory and I finally achieved my goal by reaching leveling 11. As I was on level 10 I tried my best getting all their answers. I read all questions and got all of it right. I can't wait to red Primacy and Recency. In my perspectives I think I'm not get pass this level, but at least I've tried my best getting to a higher level. 

The Highwayman Summary

For reading this week and for next week Mrs Anderson reading group have been studying an old poem called the Highwayman. It was written by Alfred Noyes and was set in the 18th century (1701 - 1800) in the countryside in England. This poem talks about a the relationship between Highwayman (A highwayman is a man who rides a horse and carries guns also stealing from other people) and a landlord's daughter. It is a interesting poem but sadly at the end of the both the Highwayman and Bess (landlord's daughter) die. For our reading task we were to create a DLO with a summary about the Highwayman poetry. We read the poem and for each paragraph we talked to our group about the paragraph and what it talks about. If you would like to listen the poem on you tube click here. 

Current Events|United Kingdom to ban selling energy drinks to children

This week for reading our group has been focusing on Current Events. If you don't the process of Current Events well it's when you go a news article and then answer the 5 W's and 1 H question. You also answer what the different points of views are in the article then you write your own opinion about the text. You also write down what the author wanted you to learn and how you felt after reading the article. For this task I've read an article called 'UK to ban selling energy drinks to children'. It's about how the government of the UK wants to ban selling energy drinks to children because the high level of caffeine and sugar. If you want to see what I think about this article read my DLO. Did you know that 2/3 of children aged 10 to 17 drink energy drinks?

Current Events|National & International Events

Since Mrs Anderson (teacher) is gone to Dubai Ms McClain is our reliever for this week, but Mrs Anderson has set a current event task for us. For this task we were to go on either, Kiwi kids news, RNZ news, NZ herald and pick a national event (something that happened in NZ) and an international event (something that happened around the world). For this task I have read an article called 'Students walk out of school over principal's truancy comments' which was for my national current event and another article named 'Fire at Brazil National Museum which was my international current event. I found the national event a bit appealing because people had their own opinion over the argument. This event talks about how the principal of Hamilton High School said to the students of Hamilton High that truants are more likely to wind up being a rape victim. This comment was very bad that the school protested outside of their school. Even adults joined to support the students.

Presentating My Overall Review - Billionaire Boy

Today for reading we were to get into our READ groups and share our Chapter Book Presentations we've been working on for the past few weeks. It was great to see how confidence our group was. I enjoyed all my groups presentation but I personally enjoyed Jeremiah's because his own cover of the book looked amazing. His book was based on War and his cover of the book included a lot of dark green.Most of the students in my book rated their books really low, but I rate mine 5/5 because there were some really important messages the author dropped such as "money doesn't always bring happiness". I also also enjoyed Mataio's presentation because he had two important themes which were togetherness and friendship. The book my group read were Billionaire Boy (me), Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Mataio), A Winter Day in 1939 (Jeremiah), Alfie Bloom (Freeman), Josefa and the Vu (Nyjah), and Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Last Stram (Affonso).

Billionaire Boy Study

For the past previous weeks Alex and I have been reading and studying the book: Billionaire Boy, written by David Walliams. Alex and I have learnt different skills reading this book such as knowing what theme is, why the author wrote the book and also a lot of new vocabulary. This book was written to inform and entertain us. We know this because in the story it has descriptive words to make the story sound fictional (entertaining) and it also teaches us a real life event which is: "Money doesn't always bring happiness". Alex and I enjoyed this book and have read it 3 times. In the google slide we have gathered all DLO's including what the big message in the story was (or what the main idea was), the two themes of the book that are taken by characters in the book, comic strip showing one key event in the story, and the last DLO which is the Overall Review where Alex and I were to redesign the cover. If you would like to see it go on slide 6. It would be great to have a comment telling what book cover you would prefer. If I was to rate this I would rate it 5/5 I enjoyed reading the book and also how the author dropped an important message. I would recommend this book to kids who like reading fictional books.

Why Sleep Is Important?

This term we have been working collaboratively within our READ groups to find information that will expand our knowledge about sleep. For this topic we have been answering the questions we needed to answer to create a presentation which will hopefully showcase the amount of learning and skills we have picked up along the way. Since the beginning week of this topic we have chosen a leader who helped us stay on track and made sure that we were worked collaboratively within our group. While we were trying to improve our knowledge about sleep we all partook so as a guideline we used the reciprocal reading technique. In reciprocal reading we have someone who summarises the text, a questioner, a leader, a person who helps clarify confusing material found in a text, and also a predictor. While doing this activity we were asked to book our own guided sessions as we needed help with the question, does technology effect our sleeping patterns and also we were asked to choose a time where Mrs Anderson will help us learn how to infer. To learn how to infer we looked at the rooms children around the world have to sleep in and answered does everyone get a healthy sleep. Our group answered no as some of them are at risk of getting while others are always on the lookout for danger as they sleep in an open space. To summarise our learning we created a presentation which answers all the questions asked by Mrs Anderson. Today we showed all the reading groups what we have done and we all spoke proudly and we were all proud of our efforts. While learning about sleep we learnt that melatonin was the hormone produced in our bodies to regulate our sleeping patterns. I found this interesting because I didn't know that our bodies produce more than one hormone. At the end of our reading sessions we presented our DLO's to everyone in our reading group. 

Do we all have the same chance of having a healthy sleeping?

This week we have been separated into READ groups. In my group was Jeremiah, Freeman, Nyjah, Mataio and Affonso. Our task was to find out why sleep is so important for humans. One of the questions we were aiming as a group was Do all humans have the same chance of having a healthy sleeping? First we we focused only on our group and asked if we have the same chance of sleeping. We all said yes, but that hadn't mean that everyone has the same chance of sleeping because we explored other kids around the world you don't have a healthy sleep like us. A kid in Brazil sleeps on couches outside and a kid from Cambodia sleep on tyres and picks rubbish early in the morning. By learning why sleep is so important for us we also came through a work called inferring. Inferring means when you read between the lines and find hints in the text to answer a questions or guessing that something is true. Sleeping is important for your mental health because it restores our bodies and helps our brains to make strong memories and process about any information. People who don't have enough sleep or have sleeping problem can get to trouble as it can lead to disease such as heart & kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.

Evaluation | Harry's War

As part of Reading this week we read a interesting story called Harry's War which is about a farm boy named Harry (who was known as a Conscientious Objector - Someone that is reluctant to join the arm force because their personalities or religious reasons) who once worked in a wool farm but was forced to be apart of the army force because they needed more soldiers. The story ended up sad because the soldeirs went to England to fight but the war had ended and there were no ships for them to get back home. The soldiers weren't treated well and since they'd wasted their time to come and fight they protested for two days. When it ended they kept themselves occupied by carving a chalk Kiwi in Beacon hill. The chalk Kiwi was created in 1919 which was carved by the New Zealand soldiers. This Kiwi is standing on top of the Beacon hill. For out task we were to create two DLO's. 1. Explaining what the story is about and interesting facts about the story. 2. Explaining the history of the Bulford Kiwi and what a Conscientious Objector is. 

Shaun Tan's Quote

This week LS2 have been studying on a Sophisticated Picture book study. The book we were focusing on was called 'Memorial' written by Garry Crew and illustrated by Shaun Tan. The book was about memories that have been past down by generations of a little family. One thing I founded interesting was that the Great Grandfather went to World War 2, the Grandfather went to World War 1 and the Dad went to Vietnam. Our task was to make a slide, each with something different based on the story. Then we were to pick one slide from the the google slide and post it. Fraidoon (partner) and I decided to talk about the Illustrator (Shaun Tan) and his quote about the story. After reading the quote we were to write what the quote means and give examples from the story. Click on this link to see the full presentation.
