NZ Winter Olympic Whakatauki

Today for Inquiry Alex, Lyric and I finished off our Whakatauki for the Winter Olympic games. We were to make our own whakatauki in English and translate into Maori. After that we wrote what the whakatauki means. We learnt that play has a lot of synonyms to it in Maori like Purei, Takaro, Hianga, Tauparapara etc. As you can see we decided to choose Purei.

Building Blocks - Maths Problem

As part of maths Miki and I worked collaboratively to figure out an answer for our math problem the week. We created a DLO showing our working and the process we used to solve the problem. The problem for this week was called 'Building Blocks'. It was hard at the start because we had multiples of ways to solve the problem but we didn't know which one was right. So we decided to try out all the strategies and selected the right one. It is important to read the maths problem a lot of times to understand what the problem is talking about.

P.B.S Information Brochure

I have attended Panmure Bridge for nine years now and Panmure Bridge has been around for exactly 61 years. As part of my Gold C.A.R.E Award I have created a information brochure about Panmure Bridge School. At Panmure Bridge School we have lovely teachers and students. We show a lot of respect to each other and try to stay positive as one. We Strive & Achieve to make our work look popular and outstanding on our blogs (A site where we post all our work on). We have numerous of work that are expected to be finished and posted on our blogs. One of the most important thing about our school is following our four important values which are Confidence, Attitude, Respect, Excellence and Innovation. My DLO has collaborative photos of the year 7's and 8's during work, sports and other curriculum.

PBS and Olympic Venn Diagram

As part of our Inquiry we created a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting our school values to the Winter Olympic values. The difference between our motto and the Olympic motto is that the Olympic Motto is in another language and our motto (Strive & Achieve) is written in English. We found out that the Olympic motto is in Latin (hendiatris Citius, Altius, Fortius). Panmure Bridge are to show good attitude towards students, teachers and visitors. People participating in the Olympic also have to show good attitude towards other competitors and to their coaches.

Kiwi Sport Reflection

Today was our first session for Kiwi sport. For Kiwi sport we are focusing on softball. Our coach was Alison who was very funny. First we had to partner up and play catches. Catching was easy because the ball was soft. As part of softball we did a lot of throwing and catching which was pretty fun.We learnt a new move called the Monkeydile which you have to kneel down and make a crocodile position out of your hands. We were to catch the ball from the ground which is called a ground ball. We also learnt that when catching a ball you have to use the butterfly shape out of your hands. My partner Fraidon and I found it easy because we've already done it in our junior classes.

Kiwi Can Reflection

Kiwi Can was amazing today because we played an awesome game called ball tag. Before explaining how it is played first we went over the theme and topic for this term. The theme for this term is Positive Relationship and the topic is Fairness and Fairplay. I learnt that Fairness and Fairplay is means when you treat another person equally like you want them to treat you equally. Positive Relationship included supportive and encouraging words to other people. Our motto for this term is 'If your argue, sort it out, don't shout, work it out. So coming back ball tag game. First we were splited into groups of 3. After that one team were picked to be the runners while three other people from another group were picked to be the taggers. The three taggers had to try and tag the runners but the rule was you weren't allowed to run with the ball (It's similar to netball). You have to past the ball to your group mates and get close to the runner to tag them. This game included teamwork, honesty and encouragement. A lot of people showed those values and it was good. At the end we were scored points to show how we have shown Respect, Encouragement, Teamwork, Participation and Positive attitude. Each value was scored out of 5 and We had a score of 21 points.

Te Wiki - The Week - Summary

As part of Reading we read the next article leading to the treaty of Waitangi. The text we read was about the one week before the treaty of Waitangi was signed. It was an interesting book. While reading we had to note all the words we are unsure of or interested in. After reading the text we were to make a DLO summarizing the whole article. I worked with Fraidoon and Mataio. When we are summarizing a text we use a special method which is to write the 20 most important words, then the 6 most important words and write a short summary. This all links back to the words we were to write down while reading the text.

P.B.S - Whakatauki

Today was a busy day and we had to get to work. As part of our Inquiry this term we had to lean our Whakatauki and learn how to pronounce it properly. Fraidon and I work together to make a Digital learning Object having the P.B.S (Panmure Bridge School) Whakatauki. I learnt that our Whakatuki is Mannaki Whenua, Mannaki Tangata, Haere Whakamua. I was struggling how to say the word Haere but I have said it so many times I know how to pronounce it properly. The English version for the Whakatauki is Care for the Land, Care for the People, Go Foward. This has been an amazing experience learning to say my school Whakatauki.

Olympic And PBS Key Values

L.I - To collect information in order to make a comparison.

As part of Inquiry today we made a Digital Learning Object comparing it to our (P.B.S) values and the Olympic values. First we went on a site and read a text about Olympics and their values. We collected all the information. I learnt that the Olympic values are Excellence, Friendship and Respect. The similarities we found about the Olympic and P.B.S values are that they both have Excellence and Respect in their key values. We did some research about the Olympic Creed and Motto and we found good information. We did little research about our school because something of the things we knew but didn't understand. I think working about the Winter Olympic is an amazing topic to study on.

Math Problem - Electives

As part of our math task we were solving out a math problem given by Miss Kirkpatrick. I was working collaboratively with Mikihiro and Fraidon. For this problem we used our multiplication, division and subtraction skills and were lucky enough to get the right answers. At first we were struggling because we didn't understand it so we read it twice and wrote all the key points from the problem. We took a lot of risk with solving out how many people take elective C,D,E,F. After trying a few times we figured the answers out. Today I learnt how to use my times table facts to find a fraction of a set.

Explanation - How is Chinese new year celebrated?

Image result for Lantern festival

How is Chinese new year celebrated?

Have you ever thought about celebrating Chinese New Year? As you may know or not know Chinese New Year is defined as an ancient and recognizable Chinese celebration that is celebrated all around the world. Chinese New Year started on the 16th of February on Friday and the celebration goes on for 15 days. Although, this celebration starts with a new moon and ends with a full moon. Did you know that Chinese people make really delicious food which has an amazing background to it?

Family meet together and celebrate Chinese New Year by eating traditional foods. In addition to all the Chinese cuisine like egg rolls, noodles and shrimp it has a special means to it. In my view of this, egg roll symbolises the wealth for the coming year and also represents . Noodles is an essential meal to the Chinese culture. Did you know that noodles should not be cut because it represents long life with good health? Shrimps is a delicious dish which symbolises happiness to people. Not many people know that there are 12 animals that represent each year in Chinese New Year.

The 12 animals that represents a year of the Chinese New Year are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. This year is the year of the Dog and its element is earth. The dog represents loyalty and honesty. It is said that If you were born this year you are most likely to be loyalty and honesty just like the Dog? Meanwhile, there a decorations of dogs all over the world. There is even decorations at the bottom of the Auckland Sky Tower. Did you know that on the last day of Chinese New Year people like to celebrate their last day by having a lantern festival?

This lantern festival is celebrated on the 15th day of Chinese new year. They celebrate this festival by lighting lanterns and having big parades lead by people dressed in tradition costumes. They also wear dragon and lion outfits and they dance in the parade. The lantern festival gives good luck and long life to all people around the world. One reason why people celebrate lantern festival is to give respect and attention for those people who have pass away in the Chinese culture. This an amazing event that happens all around world and is well-known.

Finally I have come to an end. Chinese New Year is a special and popular celebration where there is full of happiness and excitement. This is a time where families and friends gather together and eat all their delicious foods. This all links back to the egg rolls, shrimps and noodles. Chinese New Year has been around for a long time and has been an amazing event. Hung Hei Fat Choi everyone (which means Happy New Year).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the 16th of February was the start of the Chinese year and as part of our writing task we wrote a explanation about how Chinese New Year is celebrated around the world. I have worked collaboratively with Joshua and we've worked well. Our explanation had to include some of the literacy devices like simple, compound and complex sentences. We have included these literacy devices using FANBOYS and AAAWWUBBIS. First before writing anything we watched a short video about how it all started. We wrote notes and had to discuss our ideas with our buddies. We wrote down all the food they ate, the lantern festival, the race of the 12 animals and the monster name Nian who tried to scare villagers a long time ago. I learnt that on the 15th day of Chinese new year there is a lantern festival that people attend all over the world.

Tech Reflection - Art

Today was the first day of Tech for PBS and everyone was really excited to get on the bus for Tamaki College. I was in year 8 group B. I was with Mrs Telefoni doing art. Today as one of our we listed of everyday symbols we see for example I always see Mc Donald's when I go to my house sometimes. After that we had our second task. For this task we had to create a googles slide showing our own symbols that represent something about us like our hobbies, culture, or traditions.

Assembly - Manaikalani Leaders Presenting

It was a big day for all student leaders today at Assembly. It was our second time presenting, but today was important since we had Rachel from the Woolf Fisher Research center Viki from the Next Foundation group. Presenting in front them was nervous but I think Sanujan and I as Manaikalani leaders spoke confidently and proud. Having this role is a big responsibilities this year since we had to present our learning at outside school areas. I think for next time I present at assembly I could have more contact with the audience I'm speaking to.

Assembly - Summer Learning Journey Award

As part of Assembly Rachel from the Woolf Fisher Research Center visited our school to present prize winners for the Summer Learning Journey programme. We also had Viki from the Next Foundation. This programme happened over the summer holidays and has been around for many years. There were around 50 students in our school who participated and were given certificates. There were 4 outstanding students who blogged and commented the most so they were awarded prizes. Believe it or not I was one of those people.

Prize Winners:
1st place - Alex (Year 7) and Mele (Year 7)
2nd - Ofa (Year 8)
3rd - Marieta (Year 7)

Kiwi Can Reflection

Yesterday we had our first Kiwi Can session as it was amazing. Our Kiwi Can tutors were Mrs Lily and Mr Matt. Our theme for this term is Positive Relationships which means connecting with others and encouraging them in different ways you can help them out. If you encourage and support someone it will help them to boost their confidence. Mrs Lily and Mr Matt set up a game for us called 10 second tag that required encouraging and supporting each other in your team. In my opinion there were a lot of people showing the support and encourage to others. I think LS2 has started off with a great job.

Summary - The Pathway

As part of our reading Mrs Anderson's group were reading about the treating of Waitangi which is a agreement signed by the Maori and British people. I learnt that British people tryed to swap land with the Maori people for things like a tin of nails. Isn't that horrible. It was really sad that the British people weren't respecting the moari law and customs. For reading we read a book called The Pathway which is a book leading to the Treating of Waitangi. After that we made a short summary of the text. First we had to list down all the 20 important words, then the 6 most important words and use the 6 words to sum up a short summary about the text.

Venn Diagram - Mascots - Soohorang & Bely Mishka

For Inquiry we have been searching about different mascots. For our task we had to make a Venn Digram comparing Soohorang (main mascot) to another mascot. My group (Alex, Lyric, me) decided to choose Bely Mishka. I learnt that Bely Mishka was one of the mascots who attended the 2014 Winter Olympic. I also learnt that both mascot attend one of the Winter Olympic games. This years Winter Olympic is taking part in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

2014 Auckland Marathon - Term 1 Week 2

As part of our math this week Ms Kirkpatrick gave us a math problem to solve. It was based on the Auckland Marathon for 2014 and 2017. We have been looking at the average times for the full and half for 2014 and 2017. As part of the math problem we also had to search up the winners time for 2017. In this math problem we did a lot of subtracting which was pretty hard. We have created two DLO's for the half and full marathon.

Explanation - Morning Routine

Morning Routine
Key Points
  • Say my morning pray for the day
  • Go to the shower
  • Have breakfast
  • Leave to school

Waking up is not easy, because when you wake up you just want to go back to sleep because you're in your warm and cosy bed. For me having a morning routine for the day pushes me to get ready quickly and leave to school early. There a certain things I do before leaving school which I do in a hurry. I will explain to how this is done every morning.

Firstly I wake up at 6:30 and start with my morning prayer. My prayer is one of the essentials  of my day. I sit up with my hand together and close my eyes. I say my Tongan prayer and then say my English prayer. After saying my prayer I go straight to the shower.

Going for a shower relaxes me and refreshes my mind for a new busy day. I turn my water to warm since it is really cold in the morning. I shower for 5 to 10 minutes because I’m always in a hurry. I use this time wisely and make sure I brush my teeth and wash my face. After showering I get changed into my school clothes and put my badges on. After that breakfast is next.

Having breakfast is one of my best things of my routine. For breakfast I usually have Crunchy cereal. It’s really crunchy like eating millions of walnuts. If it’s an Inter School sports day I usually have weet-bix because its healthy and gives me energy for the sports day. After eating breakfast I put my lunch box and computer in my bag. Now it’s time to leave home. I normally leave home at 8:00. For me I’m always concerned about the time. So if it is past 8:00 I sometimes walk.  When I get to school I play basketball since that’s the only enjoyable sport to play when coming to school.

Like I have told you waking up is not easy, but I have to do it. Having an alarm will alert me to wake up and start my morning routine. My morning routine has been around for many of my school years, especially during my senior years. I am always willing to be at school early so I can have a great education.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For writing we have been pretty busy learning and creating explanations. First before writing anything we went over the structure and the language features of an explanation. I learnt that in an explanation there has to be title (e.g how does a biathlon work?) Introduction, Paragraphs, and the conclusion. I also learnt the language features of an explanation includes similes ( a sentences that has the word like or as) , onomatopoeia (words that include sounds that are alike to the noises the word refers) ,verbs (action word), past tense (walk) etc. For our explanation text we either had to writer about our morning routine or how we walk to school. I decided to write about my morning routine. I have a really simple morning routine.

Winter Olympic Games - 1924 - Modern Times - Venn Diagramm

As part of our Inquiry this term we are learning about the Winter Olympic games. First We watched a video showing some of the games that were played in 1924 in the Winter Olympic games and we searched the games that were played in the Modern time. After watching the video we were splited into groups of 3 and listed all the games played in the 1924 winter Olympic and the games that were played in the Modern times. After that we made a Venn Diagram about the differences between the 1924 winter Olympic and the modern winter Olympic. I learnt that in 1924 they had 16 countries attending and in the Modern times there were 82 to 99 countries attending. I had a lot of fun learning about the differences between the old and new winter Olympics.

Blog Post Analysis - Statistical

As part of our math task we created a bar graph about how many blog post we have posted every year. We called it Blog Post Record. I have worked digitally for 5 years and have posted 674 blog post. In my first years (which was 2014) I post 7 post. The reason why is because it was my first time using Chromebook and It was difficult using and creating DLO's. In 2015 I improved a lot. I posted 66 blog post. I posted this much because I got use to using Chromebooks and I loved creating DLO's. So I had a lot to post on my blog. I think past the previous years I improved a lot. My goal is to post 5-10 post a week and by the end of the year I want have 300 more posts. I think I will achieve this goal if I put a lot of effort into my learning.

Can You Guess What I Did Over The Summer Holidays?

L.I. - Writing to recount
Writing using language features to engage readers

Complete these sentences about an event over the summer holiday.
Don’t tell us what the event was just give us enough information that we can know for ourselves.

I wondered if the bouncy castle is on today, although I do not want to get caught doing mischievous things on it.

I saw one lifeguards looking at me like a spying camera.

I heard multitudes of splashes around the center.

I heard girls screeching like a bunch of falcons and boys bombing like whales.

I felt the coldness of the water splash to my back.

I felt the water slithering around my body.

I wondered if the girl’s screeching would ever end.

During the holidays I did some pretty fun things. My favorite thing about the summer holidays was going to a camp site. I went to Rotorua and went to a camp site name Tui Ridge. The problem was that there were no internet so we did a lot of walking around the place. As part of our writing task we had to write a recount with seven sentences (for each senses) about one thing we did in the holidays. Can you guess what I did over the summer holiday. The recount describes shows you what I did but I didn't tell. For this task we had to use literacy devices like onomatopoeia, metaphor, similes etc. I have used some literacy devices like compound and complex sentences. I also had to illustrate what I did in the holidays. Above shows you my illustrated drawing. Remember to Guess what I did over the summer holiday. Good Luck.
