Summer Learning Journey Week 3 Day 1 Activities

DAY 1: A Heated Debate

Activity 1: Togs or Trackies? [4 points]
New Zealand is a pretty lovely place to live, isn’t it? Apparently, New Zealand (NZ) is also a pretty lovely place to visit. In 2017 approximately 2-3 million people came to visit NZ as tourists. Some of them chose to come in the middle of our summer, while others braved it and came in the middle of winter! When do you think is the best time of year (season) to visit NZ?
If you would like some help making a decision, feel free to read the Go New Zealand website. It has lots of information about the seasons in NZ!
I, personally, encourage my friends and family from overseas to come and visit NZ in early spring. The weather is usually warm and dry and the tourist attractions, beaches and holiday spots are less busy than they are in the middle of summer.
On your blog, tell us what time of year you think is best for tourists for come and visit. Be sure to share at least three things that tourists could do while they were here in NZ.
In my opinion I think tourist should come during Summer time. Events may be packed but a lot of activities are out there that are open during Summer. Tourist can go to the beach (1), they can also go to the capital of New Zealand which is wellington and visit all the amazing buildings and status (2), and they can visit the Museum as well.

People in New Zealand love spending time outdoors. Unfortunately, the sun is very powerful and the rates of skin cancer are incredibly high in New Zealand. In fact, they are higher than anywhere else in the entire world! To protect ourselves against skin cancer, we need to be careful about how much time we spend in the sun. We have to be ‘Sunsmart.’

Read the Sunsmart website.

On your blog, list five different things that we can do to protect ourselves from the sun this summer!

1. You can put on sunscreen when in the sun

2. Go into the shade of an umbrella or a tree

3. Wear a hat

4. Put on sunglasses to protect your face

5. Put on a t-shirt with long sleeves

While it can get hot in New Zealand, especially in the middle of summer, it gets even hotter in places like Dallol (Ethiopia), Dasht-e Loot (Iran), Tirat Zvi (Israel), Kabili (Tunisia) and Bandar-e Mahshahr (Iran).
The hottest temperature on record in each place is: Dallol: 41oC; Dasht-e Loot: 71oC; Tirat Zvi: 54oC; Kabili: 55oC; Bandar-e Mahshahr: 51oC. Crazy ‘eh?!
For this activity, you are asked to use this information to create a graph. The graph should have a title along with the names of each city and their hottest recorded temperatures. You can draw the graph by hand or use a computer programme like Google Draw to create your graph. It’s completely up to you!

For the Summer Learning Journey I have completed the 3 activities for Week 3 Day 1. The activities I did was to make a bar graph based on the hottest places in the world, name 5 things you can do to protect yourself from getting sunburn, and the last activity was explaining what time of the year you would let tourist come to New Zealand and what activities tourist could go to. I enjoyed all activities and can't wait for the next activities.

  1. Hey there Ofa, it's Billy here from the Summer Learning Journey programme. Congratulations, you have been working really hard this summer. It's fantastic to see! Keep it up.

Thank you for sharing five different tips for staying safe in the sun this summer. You've got some really good ideas about how to protect your skin and cover up; wearing long sleeves, sunglasses, hat, and sheltering under an umbrella.

I love getting out of the sun and relaxing under a tree, you can cool off and enjoy the breeze.

Have you been enjoying many different outdoor activities this summer? If so, what are they?

I'm a bit jealous because I am on the other side of the world where it is currently winter.

    Thanks, Billy.

  2. Hello Ofa! Great finished activities, I was interested in reading them all. I'll be focusing on all activities you completed. I like the two places recommended tourists should go visit and especially when it is summer. Also, good tips for being in the summer to stay safe. I sometimes forget my sunscreen and I turn out getting a sunburn like when going out to the pools. Perfect graph as well, I had to do a bit of adjusting to mine to get it right so I found it quiet difficult to do that activity. Well done, keep it up!

  6. Hey Ofa,
I can see you put a lot of effort into these activities. Did you know the areas you chose in the hottest areas in the world activity are all in the Middle East and Africa, places which contain a lot of sandy desert.
    Keep it up,
    Alex
