Winter Learning Journey - Bonus Activity

On your blog, post a video or write a description about your week. What have you learned? What did you like about the trip? What didn’t you like? Was there anything that surprised you?

During this week of doing the Winter Learning Journey I have learnt a lot about New Zealand then before. I have enjoyed researching about famous people and researching about the native animals in New Zealand. My favourite activity was doing something relaxing which my one was reading. I have learnt that the New Zealand flag was first built in 1902 which means is is 155 years old. I have also learnt that More pork's (The animal I adopted) females weigh more than male More pork's. Female More pork's weighs 175g. I have learnt a lot of new facts. Did you know that Hectors Dolphin is a native animal in New Zealand. Are you aware that Howard Hughes (The person I choose to do for the famous person activity) was born in Houston, Texas in December 24, 1905 and died on April 5, 1976. I really enjoy participating in the Winter Learning Journey blogging programs.

Winter Learning Journey - Otago Central Rail Trail

You and your tour group have enjoyed your day in the mountains but you’re ready for a change of scenery. You ask Curious Kiwi to take you to Central Otago, a region of the south island with lots of rolling hills and flat, brown grasslands. While in Central Otago, you decide to join the Otago Central Rail Trail – a 150 km long cycle trail. Curious Kiwi and I (Rachel) cycled the Rail Trail in April and we loved it!

On your blog, tell us whether you would like to cycle the Otago Rail Trail one day. Does it sound like fun? Why or why not?
Yes I would like to cycle the Otago Central Rail Trail and ride 150 km one day because it sound fun and I like riding bikes. I would like to do this amazing event to loose some weight and to also be fit for my rugby training sessions. If I went cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail I will take a couple of friends so it can be a lot of enjoyment.

Winter Learning Journey - Poem


Let’s imagine that you were on the first waka to arrive at Shag Point. You had never been to New Zealand before and you had no idea what to expect. Write a poem describing how you would have felt when you arrived in New Zealand. Would you have been excited or scared? I would have felt pretty nervous, I reckon…
Feeling afraid and scared
All the mens surrounding me had a beard
I didn't know what to do but walk
I could hear whispering and talk

Winter Learning Journey - Matariki Festival

After visiting Shag Point, you hop back in the van and drive all the way up the east coast of the south island until you reach the town of Picton. You get out of the van and onto the Interislander ferry. It travels back across the Cook Strait to Wellington. Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and every winter the city hosts a huge Matariki festival to celebrate the Maori New Year. This year part of the festival is being held at Te Papa, a big museum in Wellington.
Read about the Matariki festival at Te Papa.  There are so many different things to see and do at the festival this year. On your blog, tell us about three of the events. You can choose any three events that you wish.

The places I would go to is the Matariki festival which is on July 8. The amazing thing is you could watch the fireworks shows. I would also go to the Matariki light trail behind Te Oro and the diffrent dances that happens.

Winter Learning Journey - Beached Whales

For this activity I had to read a article about a place called Farewell Spit. Recently a number of whales accidentally swam into the spit and became stuck on the beach. Sadly the whales were unable to swim back to ocean because the water was too shallow. The local people around there tried to save the 'beached' whales, but sadly a lot of them died. I had to tell what the local people did to try and save the beached whales.

1. Put wet towels/clothes on them

2. Pour buckets of water on them

3. They grab their chilly bins, water bottles, cooking pots and mixing bowls to fill with water to keep the whales wet.

4. Campers offer their towels , t shirts, and sarongs to drape over the whales.

5. Good News - All of the volunteers that helped worked until nightfall.


Winter Learning Journey - Bonus Activity - Hector's Dolphin

Hector’s dolphins are a very special native animal found only in New Zealand. They are the smallest dolphin in the world measuring 1.5 metres long. Sadly, many Hector’s dolphins are killed every year when they get caught in large fishing nets by fishermen. I think killing Hector's Dolphins should be banned in Farewell Spit because they are at risk of becoming extinct. I think killing the fishermen who fish Hector's Dolphins should be banned because there a lot of diffrent places to get fish.



Winter Learning Journey - Whale Rider Trailer

For this activity I had to watch two trailers of a movie called Whale Rider and then I had to write a summary of the movie on what is it about. I also had to rate it out of 5 based on the trailer.  [1 = bad movie, 2 = okay movie, 3 = pretty good, 4 = good movie, 5 = excellent movie].


The movie is about a girl's twin brother who was supposed to be the next chief in their tribe because only mens were allowed to become chiefs of the tribes. Sadly, the twin the brother dies when he was is born, but that custom was changed after the twin brother dies and the sister survives. I would rate this movie 5 out of 5 because this is a movie I would like to watch.


Winter Learning Journey - Short Story


For this activity in the winter learning journey, I have to pretend that I got lost in a forest all by myself. I have to write a short story (8-10 sentences) about what might happen next. I had to make sure I had to include about what you might be feeling, seeing and doing after you realise that you are all alone in the forest.

It was sunny day with a beautiful sun and beautiful clouds. As my friends and walked through the forest I dawdled slowly to check out this amazing native tree. It looked very attractive. Suddenly, I couldn't hear laughter and noises as I always hear from my friends. I looked back and non of my friends were there. I was alone! I was very frightened and nervous. I shouted and shouted but had no signal of my friends. I was very exhausted from this long day so I sat down at went to sleep. I said to myself that they will come back. As I woke up the other day I heard noise. I thought it was my friends. I jumped up with excitement, but it was not my friends. It was a helicopter. I was thrilling. I waved my flag and shouted help. Lucky the man in helicopter heard me. The man let down a rope ladder and I grabbed it and went into the helicopter.





Winter Learning Journey - Something Relaxing

For this activity I had to read to take a picture of me doing something relaxing like have a cup of tea or reading a book. I found reading really relaxing. I found out that Rachel (Winter Learning Journey Manager) like reading for her relaxing time. The picture below shows you me reading the Dan Carter book. I think reading a book is relaxing. It also shows Rachel reading her book.

Winter Learning Journey - Keeping New Zealand Beatiful

For this Winter Learning Activity I had to use my imagination of three ways I could keep my neighbourhood clean.

1. Pick up the rubbish up even do it's no mine

2. Have more than one bin

3. Have posters saying put your rubbish in the bin.


Winter Learning Journey - Rating Haka


As part of the Matariki festival, there is a two day Kapa Haka competition. The haka is a traditional war dance that Maori performed before going into battle. The haka is now performed by children/adults in the community and by professional sporting teams, including our national rugby team, the ‘All Blacks.’  The All Blacks have performed various haka over the years. Watch the following three haka videos (1 – 3) and, on your blog, list the haka videos in order from best (#1) to worst (#3). There are no right or wrong answers ☺

Winter Learning Journey - Predator Free

For this Winter Learning Journey task I had to go on the Predator Free 2050 website and read about how New Zealand people are going to kill pets like possums. I had to give three reasons why I think we should kill pets (e.g possums) or not kill pets. My opinion is I think all pets should be killed.

1. The pests (e.g possums) destroy the native trees.

2. The pests could be killing New Zealand native animals like the kokako

3. The pets eat the nectar and berries that native birds like to eat so that means there is left food for the birds.

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had to Use Google to research one famous person from New Zealand and then create a DLO and post it on your blog. I had to be sure to include: 1. The name of the famous person, 2. Where they were born, 3. Why they are famous, and 4. Two other interesting facts about them. Below is my DLO about Howard Hughes.



Winter Learning Journey - Wild Eyes - More pork


Curious Kiwi, a native New Zealand bird, is your tour guide for today. He is going to take you to visit the Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park where many of his aunties and uncles currently live. The bird park is a five hour drive from Dargaville so you hit the road right after breakfast and arrive in Otorohanga at lunch time. As you walk through the birdhouse you learn about the work being done to conserve and protect the native birds of New Zealand. You decide to help out by ‘adopting’ a native animal. Visit the Adopt a Critter page’ on the Otorohanga bird house website to choose one animal to adopt. On your blog, tell us the name of the animal that you chose and a little bit about them. What kind of animal are they? What do they eat? Where do they normally live? You can use Google to help you with your research.
The animal I have choose to adopt is the More pork. More pork which is also called Tasmanian spotted owl, is a small brown owl discovered throughout in New Zealand and Tasmanian. Did you know that female More pork's are bigger than the males. Female More pork weights about 175 g. Not many people know that More pork's Maori name is called ruru. Are you aware that More pork's mostly eat a variety of food but are mainly eating large insects like weta, huhu beetles, moths and cicadas.

Winter Learning Journey - Exploring Places

After a very busy day of sightseeing you and your group drive from Tane Mahuta to your hotel in Dargaville. When you arrive you decide to sit down and record your thoughts in your travel diary.

Before you start writing, take a minute to read more about Rangitoto island, Karekare beach and Tane Mahuta.  On your blog, tell us which of the three places you most enjoyed visiting and why.


Out of the three place I would mostly go to Karekare Beach because it is Auckland's most spectacular beaches and wilderness areas. I would also go to Karekare beach because you can do a lot of things there like surf.


Winter Learning Journey - Laura Dekker Questions

For this task As an island nation, New Zealand is completely surrounded by water. It is the perfect place for people who like to swim or to sail! While in Dargaville, recovering from your busy day of sightseeing, you notice a number sailboats going by. One of the boats is manned by a young German girl named Laura Dekker. Winter Learning Journey - Design Your Own Flag

For this winter learning journey activity we had to design our own flag. Rachel (Winter Learning Journey Manager) recommended us to use Flag Designer website. I using this website because it allows us to create our flag in three diffrent ways which is the Division, Overlay, and the Symbol. I have learnt that New Zealand's flag was created in 1902. The picture below shows my own created flag. The black and white symbolises the All Blacks and the green trees symbolises our environment.


Winter Learning Journey - Top 5 Activities To Do In Auckland

For this summer learning journey task I had to watch a the Tourist video for Auckland so we can learn about all the amazing places and stuff to do in the city. Once I have finished I had to name my top 5 places activities from the video that I would go to. I learnt that in Auckland there are 1.5 million peolple living there. This term for the Winter Learning Journey the theme is about New Zealand. Rachel said we were allowed to do the activities it in any order. I decided to do it in order. The first activity was to go on Tourism New Zealand Website and click on the Facts - New Zealand People. We had to read information about New Zealand and write down 3 facts about New Zealand People. Needs and Opportunities - Problems and Solutions (Brainstorm)

For our Needs and Opportunities task we had to talk about the healthy living in the Tamaki Community. We had to name some problems of healthy living in the Tamaki Community. One of my problems was rubbish. Rubbish is a problem because it pollutes our enviourment which is not good for the marine life. I have also inserted pictures to show you so the DLO looks amazing.

How to deal with Haters and Trolls


Today for Cyber smart we were learning about Haters and Trolls and what they do. First we watched a video on tips on how to deal with Hater and Trolls. We learnt that never respond back because things might get worse. After watching the video we had to make a DLO on the 5 tips on how to deal with Hater and Trolls. As you can see I have added photos and also attributed them so I can have permission to use the photo.

Dance Evaluation


For dance we had to make a DLO with our dance that was recorded with the video we were inspired by. We had to write down what we learnt from the dance this term and what was challenging for us with our dance. The thing we were struggling on was our timing. We decided to change our music which made our timing a bit better than before. We also added some more moves to make our dance longer. Mataio, Fraidon, Josh S, and I had a fun time this term with dance.

People Power


Today for maths we had solve out a maths problem that had percentages in it. Mataio and I were struggling at first but when Mrs Kirkpatrick showed us how to use a very amazing strategie that our group all used. This strategie included multiplication and division skills. I learnt that in Asia there a 3,672 people living there. This country has the most population out of all the countries I have been doing percentages about.

Tamaki Wrap Visit


Yesterday we had a visit from the Tamaki Wrap group. They came to tell us about our rubbish and Plastic Free July. Before going to the hall for our lesson we watched a video that told us information about rubbish and the environment. We learnt a lot from the video and told the Tamaki Wrap group about it. I have also included photos of what we did. I have learnt where the rubbish goes and what problem it does to the marine life. The DLO above tells you what we did with the Tamaki Wrap people. 

Orienteering Interschools



Today we had our Orienteering Inter schools for the year 5,6,7,8. This event was held at Pt England school. Panmure Bridge School did a very good job with following the map correctly. We had all shown our hard work we do at orienteering practice at school. Before the event we learnt how to face the map. This really helped us because it was easy to know where we were going. The challenging thing for all of us was the mud and puddles. Thank you to Mrs Kirkpatrick, Mrs Latoia, Mrs Spooner, for transport and to Mrs Kirkpatrick for looking after us.

How to write a etiquette email


Today for cyber smart we were learning the tips of how to write a etiquette email. First we watched a video explaining what could happen if we post bad things online. After we had to make a DLO with tips of how to make a etiquette email. I have learnt that if you need to get straight to the point of writing your email you need to, use short paragraphs or bullets to stay organized.  

Winter and Summer Solstice Animation


Today Jeremiah and I had completed our last Matariki Activity which was creating an animation explaining how seasons work and what the summer and winter solstice are. It took us two days to complete our whole animation. During doing this piece of work Jeremiah and I had learnt a lot about the summer and winter solstices. I learnt that the winter solstice that takes pace in the Southern Hemisphere is on June 21st and that the Northern Hemisphere of the winter solstice takes place on 22nd December.

Legend Of The Seven Stars


For the Matariki Study Jeremiah and have completed our second challenge which was the learning about the legends of the seven stars. First we had to watch a video about the legends of the seven stars and then answer question that we were given. Jeremiah and I learnt a lot of new things. We learnt the names of the seven stars and we also learnt who they had visit in the video. The photo in our DLO is papatuanuku the grandmother of the seven stars. Matariki - Winter Solstice - German Yule Celebration


Today for LS2's Matariki Study we were given three task to do which was learning about cultures winter solstice, creating an animation explaining how seasons work and what the summer and winter solstice are, and the last task was learning about the legends of the seven stars. Jeremiah and I decided to do diffrent cultures winter solstice. First we watched a video about how Chinese people celebrate winter solstice. After that we had to made a DLO on another winter solstice celebration. Jeremiah and I created a DLO about German's Winter Solstice which is called 'Yule'. The DLO above will tell you some information about Yule. One interesting fact I found about Yule was that the Yule log was the reason Yule got its name. The information below German Yule Celebration is the reference of the site we got our information from.

PBS Black Out Day





Today PBS were told to either wear black or read clothes. The clothes were to support the All Blacks and Lions team. Black clothes were most wanted to wear for black out day. Our whole school except for four people wore black clothes for the All Blacks since they are versing the lions this week Saturday. We did some activities to support the All Blacks team. First we went in the all to see some videos of the All Blacks and Lions history of rugby. After that we had to sing the Tutira Mai song for the lions tour that is on now. We were really good at singing. Soon the Kapa Haka group performed the haka while LS2 were holding up papers that had the players from the All Blacks. I holed up number 22 which was TJ Perenara. Soon we went outside and spelt All Blacks with our bodies. It was really amazing because Mr Wong used the school drone to record us. Our last activity was passing the ball challenge. Our school formed a big circle around the courts and had to pass a rugby ball. While passing the ball around we all shouted "All Blacks". We managed to get the ball around with know one dropping the ball. I think today was a really incredible day.

Intro to DigiTech



For the hour of code game we had to add codes to make Maui and Moana go to where they want to go. For example if they had to catch a fish and it's on the right we had to insert a block that says 'turn right'. There were levels from 1 to 19. I managed to finish all of the levels. It was a really fun coding game.


For our Animated Digital story about Abby and Devin we made a Animated Story about two characters name Abby and Devin who go to the park. 


For this activity we had to write down examples of the healthy living in the Tamaki Community. One of the example was the food we prepare and cook at home.

Statistical Investigation Pie Chart - Bio-degrade




This pie chart shows you how many years it takes for these materials to biodegrade (break). I can tell by this graph that plastic bags and styrofoam take a really really long time until it gets destroyed. I can also see that vegetables take a really little amount of time to get destroyed or to dissapear.

Today for Dance Mrs Anderson recorded our dance evaluation to see what we looked like and what we had to do next time. My group did very well but the only thing we had to work on was our timing. On the first moves we did good timing but during the dance we didn't do good timing. I also think we (my group) should add more moves to make our dance longer and interesting. First Aid Instructions For Choking


Today for Reading we read a book called buttons. It is about a woman name Mrs Low and her baby Hanna. It was when Mrs low was sewing the button of her sons clothes. After that the phone rang and Mrs low quickly got up to get it. While she went to get the phone she spilled the button of container. After the phone call shge notice that her baby Hanna was coughing her face was red. Mrs Low thought that baby Hanna was choking on one of the buttons she spilled. After that Mrs Low and baby Hanna went to the doctors to check what happened. The doctors said there were just a button on the fold her dress.After reading the text we had to make poster on the first aid instructions for choking.

Dance - Group B


Today for dance we were practising our dance moves. We were recorded by Mrs Anderson. She recorded us because we had to see what we had to work on. We did really well on creating our moves, but the only thing was the timing of our dance moves and the music. We practised again and again until we got it. We also have to practise to stay still and not moving around a lot of times. Our best move was our staircase. We did a good job of doing it. I think next time we could add some more moves.

Looking after our planet - Reducing Rubbish


For inquiry we did a new rotation. Now I an in Mrs Kirkpatrick's inquiry group. First we read 3 text of other countries rubbish and then we read another text talking about tips of what we can do to reduce our household waste. We wrote the ideas down and had to pick one to make a DLO about. One of the ideas were planning your meals. I did this to tell people they should plan their meals because if you buy something you don't eat it will be a waste of food and money. The picture of the apple might happen to your apple if you leave it in the fridge for to long and don't eat it. Remember just to buy what you need.

Maths Problems - Clothes Spree



Today for maths we had to solve a puzzle that has three problems in it. The third problem was the hardest because we had a limit of $80 to buy clothes. We had to use full for the $80 not $81 or $79. Lucky we tried a strategie and it worked. We did $50 + $12 + $9 + $9 which equaled to 80 . After completing the puzzle we had to make our own Clothes Spree Puzzle for other people to solve out. Cyber smart - Quality Blog Comment



Today for Cyber-smart we were learning how to write a Quality Comment on peoples blogs. First we watched a video of how to write a quality comments. There were five things to write a quality comment which is Compliment the writer in a specific way, add new information, Make a connection with the peoples work with your work you have done, end with a question, and last proofread your comment. The picture above shows you my comment I did to show how to write a quality comments. I blogged on Fraidon's Haiku Poem he made.

Dance Group B


Today for music we were continuing on making our dance moves. Mataio, Fraidon, Josh S and I we working together to make our dance moves. We also had to choose a song that were going to do with our dance moves. We also had to choose a music. The music we choose had to suit our dance moves. So if we are doing our moves our music can't be a ballerina song because it doesn't suit. The music had to be at the same speed and beat as our music. My favourite move we did was our staircase move.

Haiku Poetry


This week we are learning how to write a haiku poetry. First we watched a video of how Maui brought fire the world. After watching video we had to make a DLO and retell the video making a haiku poetry. We had to write three sentences of what happened in the video. For the first line there had to be 5 syllables, the second sentence had to be 7 syllables, and for the last sentence we had to write 5 syllables. For example destroying is 3 syllables because de, story, ing. I learnt that the Haiku Poetry comes from Japan.

Samoan Tatau


For Samoan Language this week we learnt about kilikiti which is a international cricket sport in Samoan and Tautau which is a Samoan Tattooing. Friadoon, Freeman and I did an DLO about Tatau. We added photos and added attribution. We did this because we wanted to learn something about Samoan Tatau. Something I have learnt about Tatau is that there are two type of tattoos one for girls which is called Malu and one for boys which is called Pea.

Panther Chameleon


For reading we read a book called Jungle Quest. It had a lot of animals that only came from Madagascar. After reading the text we had to pick one amial and search about it. I did the Panther Chameleon and I didn't know that they were one of the most colorful chameleon species. I have learnt a lot about Panther Chameleon and hope to learn about other animals that live in Madagascar.

Stretching Sentences - Using the 5W's


For writing we are learning to stretch our sentences and make it sound interesting by using the 5 W's. We had to make a DLO showing the 5 W's and stretching our sentences into boring to intresting. Mrs Anderson gave us an example and she made us paint a picture in our heads of what's happening. In her example she used a personification to make her sentence more intresting.We all made our own and had to put pictures to it.

Maths Problem


Today for maths we were looking at BEDMAS which stands for Bracets, Exponents, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction. We were given four equations of bedmas to solve out. It was pretty easy for me. After that we were told to make a DLO of either the equation we had to solve out or make a DLO about what BEDMAS is. Mataio and I did a DLO of the equation that we were given. It was hard at the start to solve out the equation but we got help from Mrs Kirkpatrick (teacher).

Tech - Digi Tech


Today for tech we did a new rotation so the year 8 are now on design with Mrs Ferguson, Half of the year 7 are are doing Food Tech with Mrs Tuipolotu and the other half which is my group is doing Digi Tech with Ms Anderson. Today for Digi Tech we made our own site where we had to put all our work that we do at Digi Tech. We also went on scratch and played a game called Moana Hour Code. We had to code blocks to make Moana's and Maui's waka (boat) move foward to where they want to go. For example if the waka had to go turn left we had to put a block saying turn left. There were levels from 1 to 19. I really liked this game and I feel like playing it again.

This term for Inquiry we are learning about Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. This DLO shows you the meaning of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. I have learnt that reduce means using something again and again. I have had a lot of fun learning about Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Problem Solving


For maths we were given three problems and had to do one. I did problem one. I had to solve out how many panels Mira, Api, Matiu, and Eru takes to get to the swimming pool. I had to use my multiplication and division skills to solve out the problem. Mira takes one step at a time, Api takes two, Matiu takes three, and Eru takes four. I had to count how many panels they step on. It was easy to do this problem because I knew my multiplication and multiplication facts.

Dance - Group B


Today for dance we learnt free flow and bound flow. Free flow is when you move your body with your bones and bound flow is when you move your body with your muscles. We also learnt the twisted, straight, curve and angular shapes. My favourite shape doing was the curved shapes. Joshua and I made a curved circle out of our body's. It was really fun. We had to make a square, triangle, and circle shape out of our body's. We had to do each shape on a different level height for example Joshua and I did out circle on the ground and did our triangle and square shape standing up. The hardest thing was moving from shape to shape. 



CARE Award - Confidence Badge - Dance - Fitness Session


For one of my Confidence badge task I had to do a fitness session with my class and I did. I did for dance. Joshua and I did a warm up for our class before dance. The google drawing above explains what we did. My favourite warm up move was the press ups because I am use to doing it.

Maths Problem 1



Today for maths I have created a google drawing on one of the equation our teacher Mrs Kirkpatrick gave us. I did equation one. I had to use my Division and Multiplication maths skills to solve the equation out. 

Eako Maths



Today for maths I went on Eako Maths and did my Multiplication and division facts. It was pretty easy. The screenshot above shows my result.


World of Maths


Yesterday LS2 and LS1 went to World of Maths where we had to solve problems. We met a man name Charles who was talking about what was going to happen. There were a lot of maths activity that looked different from doing normal maths in class. First we got into groups of 5. My people who were in my group was Mataio, Ma'ata, Zahra, Carlos, Florence, and me. Soon after getting into our group we were sent to an activity. My groups first activity was Greedy Blocks which was my favourite activity because there were a lot of challenging problems that we have solve. The maths skill our group had to use for this activity was our addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills. For our group to get all of the answers we worked as a team and worked colaboratively.

Tech - Design


Today at tech the design group were drawing 3D shapes. We traced all the shapes on a grid. The easiest shape to draw was the cube. We had to draw a 3 by 3 cube shape and color one side light , the other side dark, and the third side in between light and dark. This was called tone. We also learnt how to draw a 3D crating and a cuboid. It was hard to draw it, but I managed to get help from Mrs Ferguson. The hardest thing was trying to shade the cubes neatly without any scribbles.

Dance



Today we had a session for dance with our teacher Mrs Anderson. First we warmed up by watching a video. It showed some warm up moves to do before exercise. We did moves like push ups, squats, and lunges. It is very important to exercise so it can strengthen your muscles and bring your heart rate up. It is important to warm up because if the next you warm up your body will be very soar. After warming up we had to get into partners and make our own warm up routine. We had to draw it on a piece of paper and write down how many we had to do. We also had to choose music so we can dance with it. Josh and I made our warm up routine and we presented it to Fraidoon and Mataio. They told us what we did good and what we can do next time. Soon it was there turn to present there warm up routine. Mataio and Fraidoon did a very awesome job.
