Ratio Problem

For maths this week we were solving a ratio problem. It had a lot of multiplication and division. We also had to use our critical thinking to make sure that the ratio was correct. Nazella, Sanujan, Shakaia and I worked collaboratively to find the answers. Question 3 was very challenging because when were dividing 517 to another number they were all turning out to be decimal out. We then found out that we can divide 517 from 11.

Learning to Motivate Others

This term the year 7 are focusing on leadership. As the year 7 are going to be the 2018 school leaders we were discussing about what motivation means and how we can motivate people as a school leader. We came up with synonyms to motivation like encourage, cheer on, succeed etc. I think motivation means when someone encourages another person to achieve their goals. We were split into groups and worked together to make a role play of how to show motivation. Each group did well with their acting.

Navigating Narratives - Exploring Characters

1st Character
How they look and Personal Traits?
Evidence
Zach1

  • Skinny, blonde, Bushy hair, Angry and Sad

  • Our evidence is from the picture of him with his dad.

  • 1st Character
What is your impression of them? Why?
    Zach

    • Ofa - He’s rude and disrespectful.

    • Fraidoon - He’s Offensive and Bad Mannered.

    1st Character
What changes has the character gone through?
    Evidence
    Zach
    • At the start of the story Zach is feeling angry that he has to go to china.
    • Throughout the story he gets more annoyed because his dad booked a flight without him knowing.
    • At the airport his feeling becomes a bit happy because he gets $150 from his dad.
    • When he gets to Chengdu he is upset because he lost his nintendo at the airport.
    • He’s confused because he's in a place (hut) he doesn’t know.
    • We know this because in the text it says “I don’t want to go to stupid China”.
    • We know this because it says  “Tickets have been bought, you are leaving in three days”.
    • We know this because in the story it says “Dad hugged him and then opened his wallet and pulled out three fifty-dollar notes”.
    • This is true because it says “He was still upset about the theft of his Nintendo”
    • This is true because it says “seeing the room’s mud walls and simple wooden furniture, he wondered if he was in some other part of the museum.

    1st Character
How did the author use vocabulary evidence to create your character’s personality?
    Evidence
    Zach
    He’s Angry and upset.
We know he's angry because in the story he says to his day “I don’t want to go to stupid China”.

We also know that he is sad because his Dad has already booked a flight to China and he was upset that he did not really have a choice.

    2nd Character
How he looks like and his personal traits?
    Evidence
    Master Zhang
White Mustache, Long Shirt and baggy trousers
Personality Traits -  Confused, kind and mad.
Our evidence is on the first page of chapter 4.

    2nd Character
What is your impression of Master Zhang?
    Master Zhang
Ofa - I think he’s a bit kind because he let Zack into his hut.
    Master Zhang
Fraidon - I think he is angry because Zack was being rude to him and his culture.

    2nd Character
How did the author use vocabulary evidence to create your character’s personality?
    Evidence
    Master Zhang
    He’s  Confused
We know that he is confused because he does not know what Zach is saying asking them if they are being paid to dress up as the people from the Shu Kingdom.

    2nd Character
What changes has the character gone through?
    Evidence
    Master Zhang
    • When he is introduced he is curious.
    • We know that he is curious because he is wanting to find out where Zach got the Jade stone from.

Compare the similarities and differences between both characters.

    1. Similarities - They are both angry and confused.

    1. Differences - Zach comes from America and Master Zhang comes from China. Zach is a child and Master Zhang is a grandfather.

The past previous weeks for Reading Mrs Anderson's reading group was focusing on their novel study activities. Their were different activities and Fraidon and I decided to explore the characters. Fradion and I read a book called the ninth dragon. We had to read the story and explore two characters. Our characters were Zach and Master Zhang. We had to answer questions about them like what they look like and their personality traits (eg - friendly, kind, horrible nasty). At the end we had to find the differences and the same things about the two characters. One of the differences I found out is that they both come from different countries. This story is abut a boy named Zach who goes to China. The problem is that he doesn't want to go to China but he doesn't have a choice. He says that China is stupid. When he gets to China he meets this man named Master Zhang. He is really confused and doesn't know where he is because he bumped his head. Then he thinks that he is in the Museum where his Mum works but that is not true. I think this book is interesting to read. I would recommend this book to 5-8 year old children.

    Police Visit

Today was Panmure Bridge School's lucky day. The New Zealand Police Helicopter landed on our school grounds and also we had the police dog unit. First we had the helicopter land on our fields. We were so stunned to see the helicopter. We learnt the different parts of the helicopter. I learnt that at the bottom of the helicopter they have cameras to take pictures of criminals and lost people.
Second we had the police dog unit show us their dog. They showed us how the dog can sense things. The dog's name was Kahu. One of the police officers dropped his keys on the school grounds and Kahu used his senses to find them. We were so amazed.
The fun part was seeing Kahu attack one of the police men. I learnt that Kahu has forty two teeth, (isn't that a lot?). I think police officers a really supportive service to our community.

Why it's important to brush your teeth? - Animation

This week LS2 have been learning to share community questions. One of our questions was why it's important to brush our teeth because the results from the dentist was not good. We learnt what could happen if we didn't brush our teeth and what to do. Before creating DLOs we looked at disgusting photos of bad teeth. Fraidon and I have created an animation on why people should brush their teeth. While making this animation Fraidon and I learnt some new words like decay, cavity, tartar and plaque. We learnt that decay means when your teeth becomes rot and it starts to disappear for example sugar makes your teeth decay. This animation is mainly for Room 1 (year 2) at P.B.S.

    Badminton

Today was Kiwi Sport and that we are learning Badminton this term. We really enjoyed badminton because it was a challenging, seeing who can do 10 juggles with the Shuttle Cock. We were in partners doing the four hand and back hand pass. Four hand pass is when your racket is like a frying pan. You have to put your thumb on top of the rackets handle. I learnt that the back hand is similar, but you have to face the racket down so your thumb is facing down. I found back hand more challenging. I was partners with Kevin (badminton coach) and Mrs Anderson. It was challenging for both Mrs Anderson and I because it was our first time dong the back hand pass, but we did really good. We go over 20 passes. When I was with Kevin we managed to do very well. Kevin and I did 102 passes. He did the four hand pass and I did the back hand pass because I wanted to challenge myself. I learnt that India invented badminton.

    Okapi

Today for Inquiry LS2 chose to write information about an animal. The animal we chose had to start with the same letter as our first name. My name starts with a O and I decided to research about Okapi. We made DLO's of our animal and how it has adapted to living in its environment. In our DLO's we put information like their habitat (where they live), diet (what they eat) what they look like etc. Did you know that there are two names that a Okapi has which is called forest giraffe and zebra giraffe. Okapis are interesting animals and they are all over Central Africa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I had fun researching about this animal and if you are looking for an animal to research about you should pick the Okapi.

Explanation - How Children Learn at School

Are you aware that children watch and copy other people? Learning is important for children because they are going to grow up and become adults. Children ask a lot of questions, talk and have fun this helps them to learn and experience as they grow.

Firstly, children copy what they see. They copy things from other people, television and especially their parents. They are awesome observers and this will help their imagination grow. They often follow a certain role model. They listen to things that they are highly interested in. Kids also have a lot of energy.

Kids have a lot of energy and they use this energy to play with friends ad talk. They have numerous ways to play and have fun. When they play it helps them to gain more experience in the environment they are in. Children also ask plenty of questions.

Children ask questions when there confused. They take a lot of risk when they ask questions. They ask questions to help them understand. When they ask questions they improve the skill that there learning about.

Learning is vital for children because they be our next generation. Children will take risk and make mistakes. They will learn with and from each other.

This week for writing we have been practicing how to write an explanation about how children learn at school. Before writing we planned our explanation so we knew what to write in our text. Sylis and I were partners. We both worked collaboratively together to finish our work. We learnt that in an Explanation there has to be a Title, an Introduction which has a hook like a rhetorical question, Paragraph 1 2 3 and the Conclusion. The writing above shows you the explanation we wrote.

    Camels - Explanation

Ofa - How the camel has adapted to surviving in the desert?

    Introduction
Have you ever heard of a camel. “What is a camel”. Well a camel is a mammal with a very large neck that lives in a desert. They live in the desert because they are adapted to living in a hot and dry place. Adapt means when an animal makes changes so it can live healthy at it’s place.  Today I am going to tell you the six adaptation that a camel has why it has it.

    Thick Lips & Thick Thur
First I will be talking about it’s thick lips and why it has a thick lip. Camels have thick lips so they can eat the spiky and prickly plants without feeling hurt or pain. Camels also have thick fur which gives them warmth during cold desert nights. They have thick furs to protect them from getting burn as well.

    Eye, Ears and Nostrils
Secondly we will be talking about what their eyes, ears and nostrils have to protect them. Camels have eyelashes around their eyes so they can can defend themselves from any sandstorm disaster and also the sun. Camels also have hairs in their ears and nostrils so it can protect them from the sandstorm as well. These parts of the body really need hair.

    Feet
Next we will be talking about the camel's feet. Camels have wide feet so they can walk and move easily on the sand. The camel's feet contains pads so it can secure it from the hot sand. The pads also protects them from sinking into the sand. Did you know that when they place their feet on the ground the pads spread out which makes its feet wide. I think the pads are really vital to camels.

    Diet
Lastly the food they eat. Camels have one or two humps. Inside the humps are fat which can be used for food. Did you know that Camels eat salt bushes, dry plants, huge thorns and bones. When camels are thirsty they drink water from the cactus. Not many people know that Camels can drink up to 46 litres of water in one whole session. Interestingly camels can go up to 30 days without water.

Camels have changed throughout the years but will stall enjoy the hot and parched desert.

This term for writing we have been learning how to write an explanation. First we wrote down all the ideas of what a explanation has. I learnt that an explanation has to have present tense words for example the present tense word for slept is sleep. After writing all the ideas down we decided to write an explanation about how the camels has adapted to surviving in the desert. One interesting fact that I learnt about Camels is that camels live up to 40-50 years long.

    Rugby Interschools

Today was the inter-school rugby. The girls who joined the inter school were entered to play tag. Everyone was very excited. When we got to the Mt Wellington War Memorial park we practised our scrums and also how to be in the ruck. Our first game was against Glen Taylor. We played hard and learnt how to protect the ball in our own half but unfortunately we lost. Our second games was against Glen brae. We did awesome runs and tackle but unfortunately we lost 10-17 points. Our third game was against Glenn Innes. We did some very good defence and line outs but unfortunately we lost 10-12. Our last game was against Tamaki Primary. They were a tough team. We stall tried best but unfortunately we lost. We lost our games but we had fun at the end. Thank you to Mrs Caroline, Mr O and Mrs Ally.

    Term 3 Dancing Production

Panmure Bridge School is 60 years old and by celebrating this event we are dancing through the decades. Each classroom is given a song each with a specific year. In LS2 we have the 70's and 80's songs which are 'Stay'n Alive' by the Bee Gees, 'I See Red' by Split Enz and 'Footloose' by Kenny Loggins. I think dancing to old day songs is amazing because the clothes we wear and the moves we dance to. LS2 has put an effort into this dancing. Yesterday the whole school performed their dances to their families and friends. Pasifika and Kapa Haka also performed their dances . Both groups did a good job performing. Today we will be performing again and will put a lot of effort into it. Thank you to Zoe for all her hard work teaching us the dances.

    Kiwi Can

Today LS2 went to Kiwi Can. During Kiwi Can we played three games which was Hand Soccer, 10 down and Objects. In Hand Soccer we were first splited into two groups. We each given numbers from 1 to 13. Mr Malo had to call out two numbers and those two numbers had to try and get a goal between the two cones with their hands. It was a very challenging games because we had to use our hand to get the goal. My favourite game was Objects because it was a very creative game. In this game we were splited into four teams. Mr Malo and Mrs Latoia had to put an object in the middle and each group had to figure out anything to do with that object for example one of the objects was a hula hoop. What my group did with it was pretending it was a basketball hoop. I think LS2 could play this game again.

    Elections - Kahoot

For our last election task we had to create a kahoot quiz with at least 10 question based on the elections. Thank you to Fraidons group for sharing their kahoot with LS2. One of the questions we had to answer was who is the leader for the Labour party. I think learning about elections is amazing and enjoyable.

Critical Analysis - Goody Goody Gum Drops

This week and last week LS2 has been focusing on Food Advertising. We learnt what the spokesperson is on food items for example on Coco Pops there is a monkey mascot and on Frosties there is a Tiger mascot. We have also learnt the slogans of some food advertising. For example the slogan for Mc Donald's is I'm lov'n it. Today I have finished my critical analysis. I have based my critical analysis on Goody Goody Gum Drops. I have labeled all the visual and attractive details from the ice cream so that people could buy it.

    Scale Drawing

This term we have been focusing on Scale Drawing. We have been learning how to draw a butterfly using a grid. Scale Drawing is when you print a picture you want (for example a dog) and enlarge it by drawing the picture a bit bigger. First before drawing our picture we had to draw a grid over our printed picture and then do the same to our bigger paper but twice the size. During this term of learning Scale Drawing we used ratio to find the correct spaces of our picture. I decided to draw Lebron James because I think he's an inspirational basketball player. It was a bit hard to draw him especially the eyes, ears, mouth and nose. I think I have done a really good peice of Scale Drawing.

    Political Party Leaders

For the election activities I have created a DLO about the Political Party Leaders. I was researching about Bill English, Jacinda Ardern, James Shaw, Winston Peters, Marama Fox and David Seymour. I learnt what Party they represent and information about them. I learnt Winston Peters was a former member of parliament in the National Party in 1978. This task was very interesting because I didn't know that David Seymour was the youngest Political Leader.

    Election Results 2017

Today LS2 was discussing about the what a coalition is and how it works. Tiava, Zane, Mataio and I learnt  that a coalition is when the little group of parties is aligned with the bigger parties to gain more seats for them to become the Prime Minister. For example the Green Party has joined the Labour Party to have more seats in Parliament. Currently there is no Prime Minister of NZ because NZ First has not chosen their coalition.

    Cross Country

This term LS2 has been practicing and preparing for Cross Country. We have been learning how to paste ourselves. Before and after running we always have to stretch. It is important to stretch because it will help loosen your muscles. We have been running five laps or more around our school fields which I think is good. We have been practicing two times a week. On Wednesday which was the School Cross Country. Everybody was excited and bit neverous. The Cross Country went in year groups so first was the new entrance kids and went up to the year seven and eight. The new entrance kids were running 1 lap. They were amazing. They didn't give up even though it was muddy. Girls were been told to go first then boys. They year seven and eight did five laps. Five laps was lots so everybody remembered to paste themselves and to breathe in and out while running. Before running everybody were stretching. I am a year seven boy which meant I had to do five laps. When I crossed the finish line I was told I came fifth. I was very proud of myself and will do better next time.

    Princess Bride - Character Introduction

During the past few weeks Mrs Kirkpatrick and LS2 were studying a movie called The Princes Bride. We learnt the type of shots of the character. During the movie there was protagonist (goodie) and the antagonist (baddie). We also learnt what the characters role is in the movie and the type of clothing they are wearing. Buttercup was wearing White Rolled-up t-shirt which means he is a protagonist. The DLO above shows you what I learnt about the Characters in the movie.

    Democracy In New Zealand

For the last activity for our Elections task I created a DLO on Democracy in New Zealand. In my DLO I have made a flow chart. I have included the definition of Democracy and the site I got the definition from. I also included what "Demo" means and "Cracy" means. I learnt that Democracy is originated in Greece.

    Election - Helen Clark

For our second Election activity we had to research a Prime Minister from the Past. I did Helen Clark. I learnt that Helen Clark was New Zealand's fifth longest-serving Prime Minister. I think Helen Clark has the a splendid and proud leader because she was the first Labour Leader to win three consecutive elections. The DLO above shows you a profile of Helen Clark and how she changed New Zealand.

    Election - Jigsaw

For the election that is happening now every intermediate students are studying about election and what happens in a election. We have learnt all the parties that is entered in the election . In LS2 we have been working collaboratively on a activity called Election Jigsaw. We had to name all the political parties and name the leader, the electorate (what place they are representing), a picture of them and the picture of the party logo. For example Nationals leader is Bill English his electorate is Cultha-South land. LS2 have found out that the two main parties are Labour and National.

    Read an E-book Day

    Read an eBook Day

Today is E-book day. LS2 celebrated E-book day by going on Read an book day. E-book day is about celebrating people reading modern storytelling. E-book day is on the September 18th and today is the day. If you want go on the E-book site the link is here. I read a Nonfiction book called The Missing Mitt. I found this book really interesting because it was based on sport and I am really into sports. This year I was a part of the Inter-school Baseball and I really enjoyed it. #EbookLove

    Learning to use synonyms

Today for writing we were focusing on synonyms. A synonym is a word that means exactly the same as another word for example It was so hot outside. Another word for hot could be boiling. Above shows the DLO Freeman and I have made about Synonyms. It shows you powerful words Freeman and I have used. I learnt that another word for funny is bizarre. It was a bit hard because there were a lot of synonyms for us to chose from.

Why It's Important To Speak Out Against Bullying?

Today for Inquiry we were discussing how to stand up and to speak out to bullies. It is really important to stop someone bullying a child. If someone's bullying someone else you should tell the bully "cut it out you're just looking for attention" or you could say to the victim "let's go play somewhere else". Children should be using their WITS which is Walk Away, Ignore, Talk to an adult or teacher, Stand Up. Above is a short film that Fradion, Jay-Don and I did about bullying.

Why it's great to be me?

    Screenshot 2017-08-29 at 2.25.32 PM.png
It's great to be me because I can do little achievements to reach my big goal.I think one of the things that I should do to reach my big goal is I should study hard and to never give up.Today I have found out more about me. One of them were our goals. My goal is to pass my NCEA test, go to University and become a qualified Pilot. After that we got into groups of 4 and made a word cloud about why it is great to be the age (11-13) we are now.
